Advisory Vertical Guidance

A vertical path indication that some GPS navigators display on approaches without approved vertical guidance, usually to the LNAV or LP line of minima; some receivers annunciate it as LNAV+V or LP+V. It is an optional aid offered at the avionics manufacturer's discretion, not part of the approach procedure, and not approved vertical guidance like LPV, LNAV/VNAV or an ILS glideslope. The minimum stays an MDA, stepdown fix altitudes in the final approach segment still apply, and the barometric altimeter remains the primary reference for every altitude restriction. Following the path below the MDA gives no assurance of obstacle clearance in the visual segment.
