Instrument Currency

The recent instrument experience a pilot needs to act as pilot in command under IFR or in weather below VFR minimums. Within the 6 calendar months before the month of the flight, the pilot must have performed and logged, in actual or simulated instrument conditions, at least six instrument approaches, holding procedures and tasks, and intercepting and tracking courses with electronic navigation systems (often remembered as "6 HITS"). The tasks may be flown in an aircraft of the appropriate category, a full flight simulator, a flight training device or an aviation training device, in any combination. A pilot who has not met these requirements for more than six calendar months can regain currency only with an instrument proficiency check.
