The short version. What AeroPointer learns about you stays on your phone. The app has no accounts, no analytics or advertising software, and no way to identify you. It downloads weather and aviation data from public sources and from our own servers; it sends nothing about you to us unless you write to us.
What stays on your phone
Everything you set up in the app is stored on the phone itself: your settings, favorite airports, home field, saved routes, waypoints, downloaded charts, the airport database, cached weather and NOTAMs, and — in a future version — the last few observations for each favorite, so the app can show you what changed since you last looked. None of this is sent to us. It is included in your device's normal iCloud or computer backup according to your iOS settings, except downloads and caches, which the app marks as re-downloadable.
Location
If you allow it, the app uses your location while it is open to show your position on the map, to compute distances to airports and navaids, and to find the nearest ones. Location is used only while the app is on screen, is never stored beyond the current session, and is never sent to our servers. You can turn it off at any time in iOS Settings; the app works without it.
What leaves your phone, and where it goes
To show you weather and aviation data, the app makes ordinary internet requests. Like every internet request, they carry your device's IP address, and each describes what you asked for — a map area, an airport identifier, a layer — not who you are.
- Our servers (
cdn.aeropointer.comandaeropointer-data.pilotscafe.com, hosted on Cloudflare) supply weather layers, the airport database, and the in-app service notices. We keep only the standard server logs (IP address, time, what was requested) for a short period, to keep the service running. There is no account and no identifier that ties requests to a person. - Government and public weather sources, fetched directly by the app: the NOAA Aviation Weather Center (
aviationweather.gov) and National Weather Service (tgftp.nws.noaa.gov) for METARs, TAFs, PIREPs, AIRMETs and SIGMETs; the FAA (notams.aim.faa.gov,aeronav.faa.gov) for NOTAMs and charts; Iowa State University's Iowa Environmental Mesonet (mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) for radar imagery. - Map tiles come from Mapbox (
api.mapbox.com) and CARTO (basemaps.cartocdn.com). They receive your IP address and the coordinates of the map tiles you view, under their own privacy policies. - Digital ATIS for airports that publish it comes from the community-run
datis.clowd.io(atis.info), which receives the airport identifier you asked for. - The App Store (Apple) is contacted for purchases, for the "rate this app" prompt, and for the list of our other apps.
Purchases
AeroPointer Pro is sold through Apple's in-app purchase system. Apple handles payment and keeps your payment details; we never see them. The app keeps a record of your subscription on the phone so Pro features work offline.
Writing to us
If you use the in-app support form, the message, your email address, your subject line, and the app version are sent to us (through a service we run on Amazon Web Services) and land in our mailbox, where we keep them as long as we need to answer you. Your email address is used only to reply. [4.0: the form no longer asks for your name.]
What we don't do
No analytics, advertising, or tracking software of any kind. No accounts. No device identifiers. No push notifications. No selling, renting, or sharing of anything about you. Apple may share anonymous crash and usage statistics with us if you have opted in to that in iOS Settings; that is Apple's system, under Apple's policy.
Children
AeroPointer is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
