Question about a pilot's career

Postby kctjohnson on Wed Nov 13, 2002 6:38 am GMT

Hello. I hope to get advice or opinions of other pilots. My brother is a commercial airline pilot. He was the F.O. of a Fokker 27 that went down into the ocean. It carried 29 passengers, 15 of whom unfortunately lost their lives. Fortunately, my brother survived. The cause of the crash is "undetermined" but it is likely the malfunction of both engines. My question is this - how would this affect my brother's career as a pilot? Will it be more difficult to get a job because he was the F.O. of a plane that crashed?

Sorry to hear about your brother's accident, at least he got alive out of it. The problem with the airlines is that if, unfortunately, he would be involved in another accident, they may have a tremendous problem dealing with the law suites against them. I am quite sure that for this reason it would have an affect on his career, but it doesn't mean that he would not be able to find a job as a pilot at all.
I have to emphasize that this is only my personal opinion. The only way to know for sure is to contact some airline flight departments and try to apply for a job.

best luck for your brother,

Thank you for your opinion. It looks like that their pinning the blame on the pilots anyway so I guess my question was useless. It's maddening... Battling the beauracracy seems fruitless. Wish I could do something about it.
