pilots will need 1500 hours to get hired by airlines

Postby maverick on Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:02 pm GMT

The 1500 rule went a step forward this week by Congress signing a House-Senate agreement to increase the minimum airline pilot requirements. The rule is the result of the pressure created by victim families of the Colgan crash last year.
There are advantages to raising the minimums, but that would not have prevented this accident. The problem in Colgan was work rules, fatigue and pilot training. NOT pilot total flight hours.

Am i the only one who thinks that the legislatures are missing the big picture?

it just became official this week under the new FAA funding program. New airline pilots will need an Airline Transport License in order to get hired. That means, 1500 hours and all the other requirements for ATP (including the 500 cross country). Effective in 3 years. I feel sorry for the new guys but maybe this will improve the pay and work conditions of regional airline pilots as the airlines would have to attract more experienced people and not just get the "lowest bidders".
