Good news!
If you had a PPL from any country other than Canada you could only get a FAA private pilot license based on a foreign license by a validation process, or by a full FAA private pilot certification process(FAA medical+written+checkride). Anyway, the hours you logged anywhere in the world could be used towards the FAA certificates. (FAR part
61.41)
Since the United States and Canada signed a bilateral agreement in 2006, allowing certified pilots from one country to convert their license to the other, you can get an authentic FAA license (as opposed to a foreign based license) All you need is to get an FAA 3rd class medical and pass a written exam.
Beware that you may get a "day-VFR only" restriction if you don't meet the minimum FAA requirements for night. (3 hours night time for private, x-country of 100NM and 10 takeoffs and landings at night at a traffic pattern to a full stop, FAR part 61.109(2)).
