Rescue crews discovered wreckage confirmed as Steve Fossett's Super Decathlon airplane in California yesterday, October 1st 2008. The wreckage was found at 10,000 feet elevation on the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes, California.
Fossett, 63, disappeared after taking off with his single-engine Balenca Super Decathlon out of Yerington, Nevada on September 3rd, 2007. Friends stated that it was a casual pleasure flight. There was no track record of the flight since he did not file a flight plan.
Despite massive search and rescue efforts, Fossett and his airplane were not found for over a year. The airplane was discovered after a hiker found Fossett's pilot license, ID and £558 in cash on Monday west of Mammoth Lakes.
The circumstances leading to the accidents are not known yet and the search for Fossett's body is still in progress.
