Republic Airways Buys Frontier and Midwest Airlines

Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings (RJET) declared today, just a day after announcing its acquisition of Frontier Airlines, that it will also acquire Midwest Airlines from TPG capital.

Republic Airways used to run a codeshare under Frontier's brand and currently has one with Midwest on its Embraer 170/175/190 jets. The Holding company owns Republic, Chautauqua and Shuttle America airlines, which all operate under the same pilot seniority list. It currently codeshares with Delta, US Airways, United, Continental, American Airlines, Midwest and Mokulele.

According to Rick Schifter, a partner with TPG Capital, the transaction would secure a more certain future for Midwest. (source: bizjournals.com). For Frontier, the deal will help emerge it from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Republic is planning to operate a single type fleet by replacing Midwest's 9 Boeing 717s with Embraer 190s.
This raises more concern for the future of Midwest Airways pilots, who already lost jobs for the codeshare with Republic.
