Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines (NWA) announced an agreement for a merger between the two companies. This announcement brings an end to months of rumors about the two airlines joining forces. The deal will form the world's largest airline with a value of $17.7 billion and 75,000 employees.

The new airline will keep the name Delta and be based in Atlanta, Ga., where Delta is currently based. Richard Anderson, of Delta Airlines, will keep his position as CEO. Three hundred ninety destinations in 67 countries will be served by the airline. Until the merger is approved, which may take 6 to 8 months, Delta and NWA will operate separately.

The two airlines are hoping that the merger will create a stronger company, fit to deal with the many problems the aviation industry faces today.

Delta and Northwest promiss to protect the seniority and pension plans of their frontline employees in the merger.
